What
is an Exercise Physiologist? The
term “Exercise Physiologist” (EP) describes professionals from
within the field of exercise science who have specialised
into either health and fitness or exercise rehabilitation streams.
EP’s use exercise as therapy to treat chronic & complex
conditions based on scientific evidence and medical
research.
An
Exercise Physiologist is ideally suited to providing
professional services in the area of exercise as treatment
for physical rehabilitation, as a strategy for disease prevention
and part of a plan to establish and sustain functional
independence.
Q&A
Q)How
can our Exercise Physiologists help your patient? Via the Enhanced
Primary Care Plan (EPCP) initiative as part of the management of
complex & chronic conditions.
A)Patients
with:
Cardio-respiratory
illness:
Can benefit from physical activity sessions in order to strengthen
heart & lung function. Inspire has equipment which assists
patrons to accurately monitor their heart rate during activity
sessions using POLAR Heart Rate technology.
Diabetes:
Exercise can enhance blood glucose control over time (especially
progressive resistance training), produce more active muscles,
which use more glucose, keeping blood glucose levels in control.
The development of lean muscle mass will also increase glucose
uptake.
Arthritis
& Osteoporosis:Arthritis
primarily affects the joints and can have a negative affect on our
muscles, bones and other parts of our body. Participation in
regular physical activity will help: keep joints mobile and
flexible, improve muscle strength, improve & maintain bone
strength, improve balance, improve and maintain ability to perform
everyday tasks and improve overall physical and mental
well-being.
Q)
What
is the difference between an Exercise
Physiologist and Physiotherapist?
A)An
Exercise Physiologist focusses on exercise prescription with
an emphasis on exercise type, intensity, duration and frequency
with special needs patients. Physical activity is used to
prevent against disease and illness. Exercise Physiologist consult
with Physiotherapist in order to provide continued patient care
post acute phase treatment.
PhysiotherapyPhysiotherapists
deal with the management of acute injuries predominantly
musculoskeletal in nature.
The
specific programs we design will have an impact on patient
pathology.
Inspire
